What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is using someone else's work as your own.

How can I tell if I am plagiarizing?

If you take more than three words in a row directly from a book
or off the Internet and include it in your own written assignment,
then you are plagiarizing.  If you want to use an author's work you
must do one of two things:

Write the author and ask for permission to use their work.

If you use more than three words in a row of someone's work you
must put it in quotes and Cite the resource correctly at the end of your
assignment in a Bibliography or Works Cited page.

HOW CAN TEACHERS DETER PLAGIARISM

Have students write a sample essay.  This way you can
tell their writing ability.
Assign work that requires in class hand writing.
Assign writing work that asks for their opinion.
